Description
Modern Baking Powder, 1927: This small, beautifully bound book with red linen-covered boards was published in 1927 by the Commonwealth Press, Inc., Chicago, Illinois. It was distributed by the Research Department of Calumet Baking Powder Company, Chicago, Illinois. The entire title is “Modern Baking Powder an Effective, Healthful Leavening Agent Including the occurrence of aluminum compounds in foods and their effect on health.” It was compiled by Juanita E. Darrah, whose academic credentials were published on the title page. Apparently, the book was occasioned by a feud between the Royal Baking Powder Company and the Calumet Baking Powder Company. The feud was called the Alum War, and it was over the use of alum over cream of tartar in baking powder. 125 pages. Near-mint condition.
