Hood’s Practical Cook’s Book, 1897, C. I. Hood & Co., Lowell, Massachusetts: Antique American cookbook in excellent antique condition. This is a small cookbook, at 6″ high by 4″ wide by 1′ deep. Hard back, with boards covered in green linen. Embossed with a picture of a smoking kettle over a wood fire. 351 pages plus two pages listing Hood products. Binding is sound and text block is intact. Front hinge has been reinforced with white linen tape. Back hinge has been mended with clear librarian’s tape. Pages are mainly clean and clear, with a few very minor stains on a few pages.
The Introduction explains the title: “It is not from the pen and experience of a ‘chef,’ nor for the use of ‘chefs.’ It is meant for the average family, of average means, average desires, and average resources.” The frontispiece is a drawing of “Our Practical Cook.” (That page is missing a 1″ square piece at the lower corner.)
