Two Strawberry Wine Recipes from Old Time Recipes for Old-Time Recipes for Home Made Wines:  A first edition, fourth impression of an exceedingly rare, often reprinted book from 1909. The full title is Old-Time Recipes for Home Made Wines, Cordials and Liqueurs from Fruits, Flowers, Vegetables, and Shrubs. Compiled by Helen S. Wright. The first edition, first impression was published by Greenberg: Publisher. The second and following impressions were published by The Page Company, Boston. This book would be an elegant present. The embossing and gilt lettering just shout out, “Antique!”

The first edition had plain blue linen-covered boards.   When the Page Company took over with the second impression, they went all-out, putting the book in deep red, ribbed linen-covered boards, beautifully embossed on the front and  end with a detailed grapevine pattern.  The title and author’s name are printed in gold.   Printed in 1922, as part of the fourth impression, this book is in excellent antique condition condition. The binding is absolutely sound.  The 156 pages are all clean and clear.  The cover has a modest amount of shelf wear. If it was ever read, it was by a very careful reader with clean hands.  The recipes are clearly and invitingly written in a conversational tone.  Maybe I’ll try dandelion wine this spring.  I certainly have enough dandelions.

Old-Time Recipes for Home Made Wines is a fascinating read, just in general.  For example, did you know that there’s a liquor called “Tears of the Widow of Malabar?”   It is made from bruised cloves, bruised mace, sugar and rain water stored in a corked carboy.
