Presidential Cookbook: Feeding the Roosevelts and Their Guests, Henrietta Nesbitt, 1951. Hardcover book with dust jacket, written by Henrietta Nesbitt, friend, former neighbor, and White House housekeeper for President and Mrs. Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The hinges are perfect, and the binding is tight. Every single page is clear and clean. Dust jacket has shelf wear, especially at the edges.
This is more of a cookbook than a memoir, although Nesbitt shares lots of information about the Roosevelt family and their eating habits. The chapters are arranged by courses, beginning with hors d’Oeuvres and moving through the courses, concluding with desserts. Nesbitt begins each chapter with fun and historically fascinating information about what dishes they served to what people. They served rhubarb shortcake to Will Rogers. Nesbitt says that during World War II it was often difficult to buy food on trains, so Mrs. Roosevelt would send White House guests home with a picnic basket full of food, sandwiches, fried chicken, celery, olives, stuffed eggs, cake, and fruit, plus a thermos bottle of milk, coffee, or lemonade. Do you think Mrs. Trump does the same?
