Michael Field’s cookbooks are perfect for those people who like to read cookbooks–for pleasure and relaxation. Field’s recipes are often complicated, with sophisticated ingredients and intricate methods. Many of his recipes have “in the Manner of” in their titles. “Cold Stuffed Mussels in the Turkish Manner,” “Steamed Clams in the Algarve Manner,” “Baked Oysters in the Italian Manner.” All Manner of Food has a chapter devoted to garlic, to cooking with wines and spirits, the lemon, cooking with chocolate, roots, nuts, one about curry, and many other topics. Field was a concert pianist before he was a cooking instructor, and his attention to detail certainly shows the precision of a musician.
