Edna’s Taglagarina from Loyalty Cook Book, Book Five, Native Daughters of the Golden West, 1961

Loyalty Cook Book, Native Daughters of the Golden West, Book Five, 1961:  This cookbook was originally compiled and published in 1932 by Willow Borba.  Book Five is the fifth revision of the original, also compiled and published by Willow Borba, in 1961.  (Twenty nine years later!)  Paper cover with plastic comb binding.  The cover and the title page of this copy are battered, but all the rest of the 336 pages are completely clean and clear.  The last 16 pages are a “Loyalty Supplement,” the “enlarged” part of “revised and enlarged.”

This cookbook has several useful features that are relatively unique.  I can imagine these features helped make this cookbook a favorite.  At the front is a very detailed index with each kind of food listed, followed by a list of all the relevent recipes with the page numbers.  For example, “Loaf Cake” is followed by about 30 cake names with page numbers.  There’s a chapter on Quantity Cooking.  There’s a very useful chapter called Spices and Herbs for a Change, with the spices good for, say, deviled eggs listed.

Native Daughters of the Golden West was an organization for native-born California women.  See more information here:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Native_Daughters_of_the_Golden_West.
