Book of Scents & Dishes, Dorothy Allhusen, First Edition, First Printing, 1926: Charming cookbook with recipes collected by Dorothy Allhusen and illustrated by Elizabeth Murray. Published in 1926 by Williams and Norgate, Ltd., London. Hard cover book with fancy gold and navy blue boards. 247 pages. First edition, first printing. Cover has a lot of shelf wear, especially along the edges.
Binding is holding. Hinges are sound. Pages are all clean and clear. Excellent antique condition.
Allhusen wrote an erudite introduction and sprinkled little essays throughout the book, her thoughts and British history on “Vegetables,” say, or “Christmas Fare.” She includes five pages of history and reflection on “Beverages.” The recipes were either from her family’s collection or from her apparently many, many friends, most with titles like The Countess of Midleton, Peper Harow, Godalming and Countess of Clanwilliam, Montalto, Ballynahinch. I’m sure this cookbook would be a fun read for an English history buff. I wondered about the “Scents” portion of the title until I came to the last chapter–a ten-page chapter filled with many recipes for pot pourri.
