Description
Southern Cook Book of Fine Old Recipes. Wood Plantation Cover, 1938. Made for J. C. Penney Company Stores, compiled and edited by Lillie S. Lustig, S. Claire Sondheim, and Sarah Rensel. Has 322 recipes from “Calvert Manor Frogs’ Legs (A Dish for the Epicure)” to “Queen of Trifles Pudding.” The illustrations, by H. Charles Kellum, are both lovely and racist, if such a thing is possible. The carved wooden cover is by Three Mountaineers. is book AND its cover are in fine (that is to say mint) condition.
Warning: The pen and pencil images in this cook book are all of Black workers. Some of the images are offensive, with bare breasted women, etc. Some of the little rhymes accompanying the images are offensive, as well. But some are charming. The fact that this book was made to be distributed by J. C. Penney is astonishing.
