Old-Time Recipes for Home Made Wines:  A first edition, sixth impression of an exceedingly rare, often reprinted book from 1909.  The full title is Old-Time Recipes for Home Made Wines, Cordials and Liqueurs from Fruits, Flowers, Vegetables, and Shrubs.  Compiled by Helen S. Wright.  The first edition, first impression was published by Greenberg: Publisher.  The second and following impressions were published by The Page Company, Boston.  This book would be an elegant present.  The embossing and gilt lettering just shout out, “Antique!”  The dust jacket, made of what feels like gold tissue, is in excellent vintage condition, with shelf wear all around the edges, but no major tears or stains.   (Before finding this copy, no one here had ever seen the dust jacket before.)

The first edition had plain blue linen-covered boards.   When the Page Company took over with the second impression, they went all-out, putting the book in deep red, ribbed linen-covered boards, beautifully embossed on the front and  end with a detailed grapevine pattern.  The title and author’s name are printed in gold.   Printed in 1933, this book is in excellent antique condition condition. The binding is absolutely sound.  The 156 pages are all clean and clear, although the pages are slightly but uniformly yellowed.  The corners of the cover have bumped corners.  All in all, this book is in nearly mint condition.   If it was ever read, it was by a very careful reader with clean hands.  The recipes are clearly and invitingly written in a conversational tone.  Maybe I’ll try dandelion wine this spring.  I certainly have enough dandelions.

Old-Time Recipes for Home Made Wines is a fascinating read, just in general.  For example, did you know that there’s a liquor called “Tears of the Widow of Malabar?”   It is made from bruised cloves, bruised mace, sugar and rain water stored in a corked carboy.
