Description

Acadian Bi-Centennial, 1955, Louisiana Acadian Handicraft Museum:  Cookbook from Jennings, Louisiana, has an introduction in both English and French, “There’s Lagniappe in Louisiana in 1955.”  Despite the fold in its cover, this difficult-to-find cookbook is in excellent vintage condition.   The 248 pages are uniformly tanned, but all are completely clean and clear.  Plastic comb binding is in perfect shape.   It has recipes like Delmarva Rice Oyster Loaf,  Diamondback Terrapin Stew and Lapin au Sauce Piquante.  In addition to recipes, the cookbook has stories like The Shrimp Festival and Blessing of the Fleet from Morgan City, La., A Brief History of Lafayette, and The Story of Opelousas from St. Landry Parish.  There’s also an essay called “Bon jour, M’sieur!” about the Acadians and the Louisiana Purchase.  Fascinating cookbook!
