Description
Teacher in Space Cookbook: Touching the Future, 1986, Teacher in Space Finalists: Recipes compiled by the Teacher in Space National Finalists and other parties interested in Space Education. Edited by Bonnie D. Fakes, Tennessee Teacher in Space. 188 pages, including pictures of every state’s chosen teachers. The New Hampshire teacher, Christie McAuliffe, was the teacher chosen for the shuttle launch. On January 28, 1986, the NASA Space Shuttle orbiter undertaking mission STS-51-L and the tenth flight of Space Shuttle Challenger launched and tragically broke apart 73 seconds into its flight, killing all seven crew members: five NASA astronauts, one payload specialist, and McAuliffe.
This copy is in excellent vintage condition. The cover has a lot of shelf wear. Binding is firm, and all the pages are clean and clear. Piecing together the history of this cookbook, I believe I can tell you that the first edition, first printing was published by LaCrosse Marketing Concepts, Inc., LaCrosse, Wisconsin in 1986, before published before the Space Shuttle Challenger tragedy. I believe that this printing of the Teacher in Space Cookbook was published after the LaCrosse version, by Walter’s Publishing Company, Waseca, Minnesota. It includes a full page photo of McAuliffe as the teacher selected to go on the shuttle, but the cookbook only talks about her anticipated journey, not about the tragedy.
