Kitchen and the Cotton Patch, 1948, 1976:   Unusual book of poetry and recipes by Patsie McRee.  Originally self-published and printed by L.A. Lee Company, Inc., Dalton, Georgia. Copyrighted 1948. This copy is part of an edition apparently again self-published with a renewed copyright in 1976.  Printed by Higginbotham, Inc., Anniston, Alabama  in the same year, with additional poems.  Illustrated by Kathryn Burke, with about 20 full page illustrations, some of them caricature, and some of them quite lovely.  The earlier edition was endorsed by Ollie Reeves, Poet Laureate of State of Georgia and Louise F. Hays, State Historian of Georgia.   McRee was a poet who wrote in the “Negro dialect.”

In addition to the poetry, this book contains over sixty recipes for Southern dishes ranging from “A Delicious Coca-Cola Punch,” to Southern Spoon Bread to Grated Sweet Potato Pudding to Wine Charlotte.  AND, The Kitchen and the Cotton Patch contains over 20 poems, two songs and five stories like “Marse Tom” and “Miss Sallie.”  McKee writes of “The Negroes on my father’s farm,” and she says she “tried to portray something of the charm, pathos and humor of the Old Southern Negroes as I knew them fifty years ago.”

This is an over-sized paper-covered book with a plastic comb binding.    Cover has very limited shelf wear, but it does have a stain on the lower right corner and another one on the back cover.  102 pages, all clean and clear.  The binding is solid.  This is a lovely–if offensive–book in excellent antique condition.  The illustrations are simply wonderful.
