Economy Administration Cook Book, 1913, Susie Root Rhodes and Grace Porter Hopkins: Historically important cookbook from the Woodrow Wilson administration, 1913-1921. Edited by Susie Root Rhodes and Grace Porter Hopkins and published by W. B. Conkey Company, Hammond, Indiana in 1913. Hard cover book with 696 pages. Cookbook is in excellent antique condition. The cover, including the pasted-on front illustration, is in excellent condition. The binding is tight. The hinges are exposed. They have been reinforced with clear librarian’s tape. Every page is completely clean and clear, including the many clay-coated pages with pictures of the famous District of Columbia women.

This is a fascinating cookbook. It begins with recipes from Woodrow Wilson’s family cookbook, then continues short articles on domestic topics (like the White House’s tableware.) The bulk of the book, however, is pages of recipes contributed by the wives, daughters, and mothers of diplomats, senators, governors, congressmen, and others of D.C. society. Each woman’s recipes are prefaced by a gushing biography. About 50 pages of “head shots” are included.
