Description

Prairie Farmer–WLS Cook Book, Centennial Edition, 1941: I cannot find any definition of the “WLS” in this title, but I suspect it might be an early version of the huge Chicagoland radio station. Prairie Farmer–WLS Cook Book, Centennial Edition was published by The Prairie Press, Chicago, in 1941. Edited by Gladys Blair, Home and Household Department Editor. Recipes were provided by agricultural extension staffs of the University of Illinois, University of Wisconsin, Purdue University, Michigan State College, the Poultry and Egg National Board, and the National Live Stock and Meat Board.

Hard cover book with 310 pages. Cover has a moderate amount of shelf wear. As far as I can see, all pages are clean and clear except for the many, many recipes written on the black pages in pencil. Hinges are in good shape.  Binding is strong. Front cover seam is reinforced with clear librarian’s tape.  Excellent vintage condition.

The cookbook has the traditional chapters of a comprehensive cookbook, plus chapters on festival menus, cooking for crowds, and a very special chapter of “Centennial Recipes,” with recipes from 1841, 1852, 1853, 1849, 1905, 1883, 1905, 1905, 1870, and more.
