National Home Cook Book, National Clock & Mfg Co., Chicago, circa 1900: Comprehensive cookbook that”provides not only recipes for every day routine cookery . . . but also contains a separate department for Fireless Cookery Recipes and Casserole Baking Dish Recipes, with suggestions on serving as well as cooking; a new and valuable innovation in Cook Books.” (It’s hard to imagine a world without casseroles, isn’t it.) There’s a special itemized index at the back of the book for casserole recipes. The cookbook has many blank pages, so that the housewife could record her favorites.
This cookbook was apparently used as a premium for customers of the National Clock & Mfg Co. Hard back with 192 pages. It is in good antique condition. The cover is in good shape, with some shelf wear at the corners and edges. The title page is loose from the binding; otherwise, the binding is completely firm. The front hinge is exposed, but holding. The back hinge is good. This cookbook was never used. All the pages are clean and clear. However, the pages are uniformly tanned and brittle. The lower corners of the first six pages have broken off. This cookbook would be excellent as a display.
