Description

Margaret Powell’s Cookery Book, 1970, 2012, 500 Upstairs Recipes from Everyone’s Favorite Downstairs Kitchen Maid and Cook: Margaret Powell wrote Below Stairs: The Classic Kitchen Maid’s Memoir That Inspired Upstairs, Downstairs and Downton Abbey. It was published in 1968. Then, in 1970, she wrote and published her Cookery Book. This copy is from the first United States publication of the Cookery Book, published in 2012 by St. Martin’s Press, New York, doubtless inspired by the enormous popularity of Downton Abbey. This copy is from that first U.S. edition, first printing. It is in as-if-new condition. Hard cover book with dust jacket. Dust jacket is pristine, as is the book. Definitely gift quality.

Each chapter of the Cookery Book begins with Powell’s very candid comments about the houses where she worked, the families she served, plus specifics about kitchens, equipment, and the food she prepared. She tells tales about learning how to cook by teasing the details of a recipe or a technique from visiting chefs. Many of the recipes she presents are quite sophisticated, recipes like Potatoes a la Florence, Rabbit Pilau, Compote of Snipe, Sardines a la Bombay, and Queen Mab Pudding.
