Description

Les Diners de Gala by Salvador Dali: This copy of a splendid work of art–and a fantastic cookbook–is a first edition, first printing of the English edition of Diners de Gala, translated from the French by Captain J. Peter Moore. Published by Felicie, Inc., Publishers, New York, in 1973. Printed and bound in France.  The oversized book is mint condition.  The gold foil dust jacket is nearly mint.  It has a slight bit of rubbing.  All pages are clean and clear. The binding is perfect. 321 heavy, clay-coated pages, all with Dali art. Some of the art is sexually explicit.

Besides being beautiful (and disturbing) Les Diners is a serious cookbook. It not only includes the traditional cookbook chapters on meats, eggs, poultry and game, and vegetables, Dali’s cookbook also includes a chapter on exotic dishes, one on snails and frogs, and an aphrodisiacs chapter. Lasserre, Maxim’s, la Tour d’Argent, and Le Buffet de la gare de Lyon contributed recipes.  Dali includes 136 recipes in 12 categories: exotic dishes; eggs and sea food; first courses; meats; snails and frogs; fish and shell fish; game and poultry; pork; vegetables; aphrodisiacs; and desserts.  Dali wrote “When I was six years old I wanted to be a cook.”  The dust jacket continues, “He is now sixty eight and his ambition is fulfilled in the shape of a book.”
