Description

Kitchen and the Cotton Patch:  True first edition, first printing of an unusual book of poetry and recipes by Patsie McRee.  Self-published and printed by Cullom & Ghertner Co, Atlanta, Georgia. Copyrighted 1948.    Illustrated by Kathryn Burke, with about 20 full page illustrations, some of them caricature, and many of them quite lovely.  Endorsed by Ollie Reeves, Poet Laureate of State of Georgia and Louise F. Hays, State Historian of Georgia.   McRee was a poet who wrote in the “Negro dialect.”  This book contains over sixty recipes for Southern dishes ranging from “A Delicious Coca-Cola Punch,” to Southern Spoon Bread to Grated Sweet Potato Pudding to Wine Charlotte.  AND, The Kitchen and the Cotton Patch contains over 20 poems, two songs and five stories like “Marse Tom” and “Miss Sallie.”  McKee writes of “The Negroes on my father’s farm,” and she says she “tried to portray something of the charm, pathos and humor of the Old Southern Negroes as I knew them fifty years ago.” (Okay . . .)

This is an over-sized hard covered book without its dust jacket.  Cover has slight shelf wear and some gilt stain. 102 pages, all of them clean and clear.  The Southern Fried Chicken page is spotted. A lovely–if offensive–book in good vintage condition.

And don’t forget to click on “Recipes” at the top of the VintageCookbook.com Homepage. You’ll find one great recipe from many of the great antique and vintage cookbooks, including the recipe for Southern Fried Chicken from the Kitchen and the Cotton Patch!
