Description
Happy Glutton or How to Eat & How to Cook, Alin Laubreaux, 1931. OMG! What Recipes! Cookbook with lots of entertaining text and clever illustration,
written by a novelist. (Although I am confused. When I look Alin Laubreaux up on Google, I only find an author named Alain Laubreaux. Maybe he changed the spelling of his name?) Translated from the French by Naomi Walford. Published in London in 1931 by Ivor Nicholson and Watson. First edition, first printing. Hard cover book with cover illustration that matches this dust jacket. 205 pages, plus blank pages (still blank) for additional recipes. Dust jacket is a mess, with serious shelf wear all around all the edges. Book itself is in excellent antique condition. Hinges are perfect. Binding is solid. Pages are clean and clear, although they do have uniform tanning at the margins.
This is a delightful book. It begins with many thoughts and epigrams on cooking and eating, nearly all of them very clever. Then, the recipes! Laubreaux introduces them with funny stories and clever tales of experiences cooking and eating the dishes. These are the kind of recipe that suggest using “a bit of butter” and “some strips of bacon.” There are chapters on preparing and cooking wild game, chapters on holiday menus, and chapters with suggested menus plus recipes for making those menus come to life. This is one of those cookbooks you should never read while hungry.
