Description

Country Kitchen, Della T. Lutes, 1936:  The cookbook that was deemed “The most original book of 1936,” by the American Booksellers Association. The author wrote an autobiography telling the stories of her childhood during the 1870s. What makes an autobiography a cookbook? Lutes has a wonderfully vivid memory of the foods of her childhood, the food she had at home and away from home, and she includes the detailed recipes for all of these dishes. The recipes are woven into the narrative, not set out apart from the text.

This charming book was first published in the Atlantic Monthly in 1935, then published as a hard cover book by Little, Brown, and Company in 1936.  261 pages, plus a recipe index. The book is in excellent antique condition, with the pages all clean and clear and the binding firm. Hinges are perfect.  Hard boards covered in red and white gingham.  Dust jacket has tears and stains, but it is basically all here, including the illustration.  Definitely gift quality.
