Cook Book by Oscar of the Waldorf, First Edition, Presumed First Printing, 1896. Excellent Antique Condition!

$440.00 $375.00

Cook Book by Oscar of the Waldorf: Huge, very difficult to find cookbook by Oscar Tschirky, Maitre d’ Hotel, The Waldorf. Published in 1896 by The Werner Company, Chicago and New York. First edition, presumed first printing, no other being mentioned.  Frontispiece photo of Tschirky with what I presume is a printed signature.

This is a very large, hard cover book, with linen covered boards.   The cover has quite a bit of shelf wear, and the spine cover edges are worn, but it is still firmly attached to the boards.  The hinges are exposed, but holding.  The binding is firm, with all the pages attached.  While the pages are lightly tanned at the edges, the pages are all clean!  (These images are a little curved because I was being very careful of the binding.) 907 pages. Price reflects the condition of the book.

Justifiably famous, the Cook Book by Oscar of the Waldorf has many notable features. It opens with “A few Suggestions with Regard to the Kitchen,” has comments on “Menus, or Bills of Fare,” has an extensive list of seasons in which certain items are available, plus an extensive suggested market list for meats and fish. Then, of course, there are hundreds–if not thousands–of elegant recipes for every dish you can imagine.
