Brown Derby Cook Book, 1949, 1952 Leather Bound Edition! The 1949 first edition of this cookbook was published by Doubleday & Company. Then, in 1952, the Brown Derby Service Corporation had a limited run of the book published, bound in leather, for presentation to its special patrons, even though its copyright is listed as 1949. This copy, bound in rich brown mission leather, is from that limited run. Cover illustration was separately printed, also on leather, and separately attached to the front board. The leather is nicely aged, with shelrif wear along the edges. Hinges are perfect. Binding is solid. The 272 pages are all completely clean and clear. This copy is in nearly mint condition, with just a tiny bit of shelf wear along the edges of the cover.
This book was prepared by Brown Derby Service Corporation and actually written by Leonard L. Levinson. One chapter has a brief history of the restaurant that began in Los Angeles. Another chapter features “Specialties of the House,” including the recipe for the original Cobb Salad–invented at the Brown Derby. (The copies for sale on Amazon are listed from $500 to $700!)
