Black Dog Summer on the Vineyard Cook Book, 2000: Cookbook from the Black Dog Tavern, established in 1971 on Martha’s Vineyard. Cookbook written by Joseph Hall and Elaine Sullivan with Jack Livingston, Charlie Esposito, and Doug Hewson. Published in 2000 by Little, Brown and Company, Boston. Stated first edition, first printing. Oversized hard cover book with dust jacket. Cookbook has a history of the restaurant and details about its pantry. That is, the authors explain precisely what spices they use (juniper berries among them,) what specific vegetables they use (daikon radish, radicchio, tree ears?) and what specific fish they use. (I wish all cookbooks–and restaurants–did this.) Then, they begin the recipes, organized via breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert.
Clever illustrations and equally clever writing make this a memorable cookbook. Of special note are the various “how to” pages. (How to flip an omelet; how to open a clam.) This first edition, first printing cookbook is in mint condition. The book is perfect. The dust cover has almost undetectable shelf wear–just sort of a 1/8″ fold at the bottom edge. Definitely gift quality.
