Antoine’s Restaurant Since 1840 Cookbook, 1978, First Edition, First Printing: A collection of the original recipes from New Orleans’ oldest and most famous restaurant, written by Roy F. Guste, Jr., fifth generation proprietor of Antoine’s. Published by Carbery-Guste, New Orleans. This is a hardback cookbook with its dust jacket. Dust jacket has a few minor issues. Book is in mint condition. Hinges are perfect. Binding is tight. All of the 199 pages are clean and clear.
Guste commissioned 12 painting by Merryl Tanner to illustrate the book. Those large illustrations were supplemented with Coleman Heriard’s small paintings of the products used in Antoine’s cuisine. These illustrations make for an unusually charming book. The first chapter, the history of the restaurant, features many old photographs and prints. The appetizer chapter is particularly rich, with recipes for 23 different appetizers. There are also many recipes for sauces, seafood, soups, omelettes, poultry and meats, as well as vegetables, salads, drinks, and desserts. Wait until you see the desserts!
