Description

African Cookbook, 1970, First Edition, First Printing, by Bea Sandler:  Hard cover cookbook complete with dust jacket written by Bea Sandler and illustrated by Diane and Leo Dillon.  Published by World Publishing Company, New York and Cleveland.  233 pages.  Dust jacket is in excellent vintage condition.  Book is in as-if-new condition.  Stated first edition, first printing.

Sandler presents menus and recipes for complete meals from eleven African countries:  Senegal, the Sudan, Mozambique, the Malagasy Republic, Ethiopia, Kenya, Liberia, South Africa, Morocco, Ghana, and Tanzania.  She also discusses serving customs and gives suggestions on how an American can present an African dinner with some degree of authenticity.  Those chapters are followed by a varied and interesting collection of African recipes conveniently arranged by courses.

The book is beautifully illustrated with twelve full-page plates by Diane and Leo Dillion.  Each drawing has an artifact or design–a mask, a cooking implement, a ceremonial object, an African go–which is specific to its particular country.
