Written by Marie Nightingale and published by Charles Scribner’s Sons, New York, in 1971. This copy of the book is a first edition, presumed first printing. Hard cover with dust jacket. 212 pages. Both book and dust jacket in mint condition. Definitely gift quality.
The illustrations for this book are delightful, as well, but I can’t find any attribution for them.
The first part of the book is a history of the groups that populated Nova Scotia, the Indians, the French, the English, the Germans, the New Englanders, the Irish, the Scots, and the Negroes. Then, Nightingale supplies their recipes, along with colorful bits of history and stories about the cooks. The recipes include soups and chowders, fish, meats, breakfast and supper dishes, vegetables, breads, scones, buns and doughnuts, pies, desserts, sauces, cakes, cookies and little cakes, jams and pickles, beverages, candies, and cures and tonics.
