Tennyson Neely, New York. With drawings by Francis Day and George R. Halm. Hard cover book with 141 pages, plus 13 pages of advertisements for books published by F. Tennyson Neely. Cover has some shelf wear and stains. Hinges are good and binding is solid. Pages are all clear and clean.
This very entertaining cookbook is written by a young bachelor in love with a woman he just calls “Her.” Welch must have moved in some very la-di-da social circles, and the first half of the book is stories and anecdotes about food he has eaten and talked about with his bachelor friends. Welch writes in the first person and with a lively ability to supply detail and to set scenes. He writes when the chafing dish had been recently invented and when it was extremely popular. He sprinkles chafing dish recipes throughout the stories. The second half of the book is purely cookbook, all with recipes for the chafing dish.
