Select Recipes of Prominent Ladies, 1929, George M. Bates. Rare First Edition, First Printing. Self-Published Cookbook. Slim antique cookbook that was compiled and self-published in 1928=9 by George M. Bates, World War Veteran of Saint Paul, Minnesota. Hard cover book with 72 pages plus index. Cover has a lot of shelf wear. Hinges are good, binding is tight, pages are uniformly tanned, especially at the edges. Other than the tanning, all pages are clear and clean. The first owner penciled in (on the fly leaf) recipes for ice box cookies, pie crust, hot milk cake, and oatmeal cookies.
Recipes are for relishes, soups, fish, entrees, salads, vegetables, bread, desserts, and cake. Also include are select menus and “Some Interesting Recipes of Our Grandmothers,” like corn meal muffins, graham gems, johnny cakes, and oldfashion “rye ‘nd injun” bread.
