Simple French Cooking for English Homes: Simple French Cooking for English Homes, 1923, Presumed First Edition: Cookbook by X. Marcel Boulestin. Frontispiece by J. E. Laboureur. Published by Frederick A. Stokes Company Publishers, New York. Printed in Great Britain. Frontispiece protected with a tipped in layer of tissue paper. Hard cover with no dust jacket. 120 pages. Hinges are cracked but holding. Cover has shelf wear and stains. Foxing on the title page. Binding is in excellent condition. All pages are clean and clear.

I think this is a 1923 first edition mainly because there’s no date of publication. Later editions had different publishers and were clearly dated. This is a terrifically erudite cookbook. (How many cookbooks have a footnoted quotation from Tristram Shandy on the first page. The General Remarks chapter is full of clever and interesting quotations and suggestions about cooking and household management. There’s a chapter on wine and a chapter with a week’s menus. And–while I know “Simple French Recipes” seems like an oxymoron–the recipes do sound simple!
