Bahamian Cook Book Recipes by Ladies of Nassau, 1976 Edition. Nearly Mint Condition. Recipes collected by Mrs. Leslie Higgs. Card stock cover. 159 pages, plus many pages of local advertising. No date is given for the original edition, but a forwarding note by Helen Higgs, presumably either Mrs. Leslie Higg or the daughter of Mrs. Higgs, says the first edition was more than 40 years ago. That puts the original printing in 1936. Other than slight darkening of the cover, this copy is in perfect condition. Pages all clear and clean, binding perfect.
This is a fascinating little cookbook. Many of the names of the contributors begin with the title “Lady.” The advertisements are for high-end designer boutiques, wine shops, jewelry stores, champagne brands. The recipes have fun little asides, like “easy recipe. Perfect for cruising.” And, there are the exotic ingredients in Osso Buco, Acaras, Steamed Abaco Wild Hog, Dindon Rouleen Gelee, Creamed Chow Chow, Fried Achee, Counch Souse, and many more.
