American Cook Book: A Selection of Choice Recipes, Fanny Lemira Gillette, 1887: Famous cookbook published by H. J. Smith & Co., Chicago, in 1887. (1887 was a great year for Gillette; her White House Cook Book was also published in 1887.) This is a large (7 3/4″ wide by 10″ high by 2″ deep) cookbook with linen-covered boards that are heavily embossed with a pebbled texture, the title, a seal with the quotation ” E Pluribus Unum.” 521 pages.
This copy of the American Cook Book is from the first edition, first printing, and it is in excellent antique condition. The corners of the cover are bumped and worn, as are the top and base of the spine cover. The hinges are exposed but holding, and they have been reinforced with clear librarian’s tape. The frontispiece and title page are in mint condition, still with the protective tissue paper. The book’s binding is solid, with the text block completely intact. Every single page is clean and clear. They are all absolutely perfect. Definitely gift quality.
