Eat, Drink and Be Merry in Maryland: An Anthology from a Great Tradition. Classic cookbook by Frederick Philip Stieff, published by G. P. Putnam’s Sons in 1932. This copy is from the first edition, third impression. 326 pages. This copy of the cookbook is in excellent antique condition. Hard cover boards covered in black cloth, with red, black and gold embossing. The cover has quite a bit of shelf wear, especially on the edges and corners. The hinges and binding are perfect. The pages are all clear and clean.
Eat, Drink and Be Merry has illlustrations by Edwin Tunis; many of the pictures have captions that can easily be considered racist. Stieff does a great deal of name-dropping in the text, with folks like Mark Twain, Washington Irving, Charles Dickens, being mentioned. Each chapter has at least two sketches of named mansions in Maryland. The chapters are for soups, oysters, terrapin, sea food, game, fowl, eggs, meats, and stuffing.
