This copy is from the second edition (revised) printed in 1941 by Clyde W. Saunders and Sons, Printers and Publishers. Many lovely pen and ink drawings by Margaret Dashiell depicting black and white citizens going about their daily lives, often with seriously stereotyped captions. Many full-page illustrations, plus one at the top of every chapter. Many illustrations include Civil War soldiers. Hard cover book with 309 pages. Cover has mild shelf wear. Binding is strong. Hinges are intact. Pages are clean and clear.
Margaret Dashiell was a respected artist and suffragist who lived in Richmond, famous for her drawings and paintings of African-American domestic workers, market vendors, and tattered Confederate veterans. See more information about her, here: Margaret May Dashiell
This cookbook is one of the most historically conscious cookbooks I’ve seen, with chapters on Recipes Popular in Early Virginia, Ante Bellum Recipes from the South, Recipes Popular when Club was Founded (about 1911,) and Recipes Popular in Virginia Today. Book includes many pages of local advertising, as well as an index of advertisers.
