Best Men Are Cooks, 1941, Frank Shay, First Edition, First Printing: Very difficult-to-find cookbook in excellent vintage condition.

This cookbook is a bit of a puzzle to me. Most people who write cookbooks write only cookbooks. Cookbook authors cook a lot for many years, then begin writing from their experience. Food writers often branch out to write about the society where their food originates, a la Anthony Bourdain. But they stick to the topic of food.

Shay was someone who made his living writing books on many topics, topics as different as Judge Lynch: His First 100 Years; Fifty Contemporary One-Act Plays; Iron Men and Wooden Ships; Incredible Pizarro, Conqueror of Peru; Barroom Ballads; and Mary Read, Pirate Wench. His cookbook is a comprehensive one, with a clever preface and a concluding chapter called “The Stag at Bay.” This cookbook seems to be his only culinary venture.

This book was published in 1941 by Coward-McCann, Inc., New York. Hard cover book with no dust jacket. 281 pages. It is in excellent vintage condition. The fly leaf has been removed. The hinges are sound and the binding is perfect. The pages are all clean and clear.
